Recycling is critical to the future of Troy. Not only does recycling benefit the environment, it also benefits you as a taxpayer. Simply put, recycling saves money. The bottom line is that the more you recycle, the more money the City saves through avoided tipping fees.

More must be done. To accompish our goals of protecting the environment and saving taxpayer dollars, it is important that every resident recycles. Every time you throw something out that can be recycled, it is your tax dollars being thrown away.

Remember, the success of the recycling program depends on the participation of every resident. So please recycle and help to make Troy cleaner and safer.

HELPFUL HINTS

• Newspapers, cardboard, plastics, metal, and glass

  • Collection Containers must be used for newspapers, cardboard, plastics, metal, and glass.
  • Plastics, metal, and glass CANNOT be intermixed with newspapers and cardboard. If it is mixed, it will not be picked up. Plastics are numbered on the bottom of the container with a triangle.
  • DO NOT place your recyclables in plastic bags!
  • Paper products should be placedd in a brown paper bag.
  • Collection containers must be placed out for collection by 6:30 am on your scheduled collection day.
  • If your recycling is not collected on your scheduled day, Leave your container out for collection and call 270-4579 as soon as possible so that your materials can be collected. DO NOT wait to call for missed collections!

• Bulk Waste collection Call (518) 270-4679 for collection of large household furnishings, appliances, toys, tires, clothes, household demolition material, etc.

• Yard Waste collection Call (518) 270-4679 for collection of yard waste. Grass clippings, leaves, and branches comprise approximately 10% of the City's waste. In an effort to better manage this segment of the waste stream, residents are encouraged to use biodegradable yard waste bags when placing this material out for collection. Bags are available at local hardware and department stores.

• Waste Reduction Waste reduction is as important as recycling. Both benefit the entire community by protecting the environment, conserving landfill space, and saving money. Here are some helpful hints to reduce waste:

  • Buy only what you will use, but whenever possible,
  • buy the items you use often in bulk qualtities or economic sizes.
  • Purchase durable, repairable goods.
  • Buy products with the least amount of packaging.
  • Buy products made from and packaged in recycled materials.
  • Find ways to reuse household products. Reuse paper and plastic grocery bags.
  • Save magazines and give them to friends, neighbors, nursing homes, schools, etc.
  • Donate unwanted goods to charity or hold a garage sale.

HOW AND WHAT TO RECYCLE

	Place your newspapers on top of your recyclables.		Uncontaminated corrugated (Wavy interior ONLY).
	Stand newspapers up on the side of your container, and prop them up with your other recyclables.		If cardboard will not fit, tie in bundles with string or rope. Maximum size: 3 ft. x 3 ft. x 2ft.
	Place newspapers loosely in a paper bag. Uncontaminated inserts are OK.		Place in recycling box loosely.

	Rinse all containers. Don't break glass.		Remove all caps and lids. Discard can tops and bottoms with regular garbage.
	Plastics and metals may be crushed to save space. Place loosely in recycling container.

Since the closure of the Troy Landfill, the City recycling program has had a significant positive impact on City finances. The most important financial factor has been in the area of avoided disposal costs. Annual solid waste disposal for the City averages 1.2 million dollars. The residents of Troy, through the curbside recycling program, have diverted an annual average of 2,400 tons of recyclable commodities. As the City pays for every ton of disposed solid waste, at an average tipping fee of $53.00 per ton, Troy residents have saved the City an average of $115,000 annually through curbside recycling.
