The Master Plumbers License Application is available online or at the City Clerk’s Office, 433 River Street, Troy, NY 12180. Your application should include:
- A detailed description of your apprentice training and notarized copies of diplomas.
- The minimum requirement for licensing is five (5) years continuous employment in the plumbing trade. Attach notarized letters from each contractor you have worked for during the past five years.
Return the completed application with supporting materials to the City Clerk. After your application is approved, you will be notified of the next scheduled exam date.
Exams are scheduled on an as-needed basis. After your application is approved, you will be contacted regarding an exam date.
The exam fee is $100 which you can pay via cash or check at the time of the exam. Checks should be made out to Troy City Clerk. The exam is based on the New York State Plumbing Code. codes.iccsafe.org/public/document/toc/1053. You must pass the exam with a grade of at least 75%. If you pass the exam, the license will be issued for an additional $150 fee, payable via cash or check at the City Clerk’s Office. Checks should be made out to Troy City Clerk. Your license will expire on December 31 regardless of when it is issued.
If you fail the exam, you are entitled to a re-examination after a 90-day period. If you fail a second time, you will be eligible for re-examination six months from the date of the second exam.
Each licensed Master Plumber must submit a renewal application each year. Renewal licenses are $150. The renewal application will be mailed to you in early October and must be postmarked or hand-delivered to the City Clerk’s Office no later than December 15. A late filing fee of $250 will be applied to any renewal application postmarked/delivered after December 15 ($400 total).
