Mayor Madden Announces 2018 Hazardous Waste Collection Day

TROY, NY – Mayor Patrick Madden today announced that the City of Troy’s annual Household Hazardous Waste & Electronic Recycling Collection Day has been scheduled for Saturday, September 22, 2018. The event provides Collar City residents the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous materials not accepted through the City’s normal garbage collection service.
Mayor Madden said, “We are pleased to again offer this valuable free service to Troy residents and families. After obtaining a participation coupon at City Hall, the public can safely dispose of various harmful contaminants, helping reducing their impact on our environment by redirecting toxic and hazardous materials away from local landfills.”
Residents wishing to participate in the program must pick up a Household Hazardous Waste Day coupon at the Mayor’s Office at Troy City Hall, located at 433 River Street, 5th floor. Coupons can be obtained by Troy residents (with identification) during normal business hours, 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). Only 250 coupons are available, and will be issued on a first come, first served basis.
Acceptable forms of identification include: driver’s license, Troy resident ID card, government-issued identification that includes an address, tax/utility bills, or a cancelled rent check showing a Troy address. A driver’s license showing a P.O. Box address will not be accepted as proof of City residence.
The annual collection event will be held at the City’s “Alamo” site, located directly across the street from the Rensselaer County Correctional Facility near the intersection of Main Street and East Industrial Parkway in South Troy.
Items acceptable for disposal through the program include: aerosols, automotive fluids, asbestos insulation (must be damp and double bagged), caustic/acidic cleaners, chemistry sets, corrosive liquids (acids, bases, muriatic acid, ammonia), pesticides, oil/latex paint, stain, paint thinners, poisons, anti-freeze, motor oil, propane cylinders (20 lbs. or smaller), agricultural pesticides, DDT, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, PCBs, resins/adhesives, fuels (gas, kerosene), oxidizer (pool chemicals), and household cleaners and polishes.
In addition, scrap metal, and electronic waste are included for disposal in this year’s event, including: computers, laptops, keyboards, monitors, televisions, and compact fluorescent bulbs (florescent tube lighting not accepted). Tires will also be accepted at the event for a fee of $3 per tire (cash payments only).
Items NOT acceptable include: medical waste or pharmaceuticals, explosives, household garbage, recyclables (plastics, glass, paper products, cardboard, etc.), bulk refuse (furniture, carpet, mattresses, toys, appliances, etc.), large propane tanks (over 20 lb.), household / vehicle batteries, and fluorescent lighting (tubes) will not be accepted at the hazardous waste event.
Confidential paper shredding services will also be available to program participants on Saturday, September 22. Residents with a solid waste day coupon can bring personal paper documents for disposal during their designated drop-off time.
The disposal event is a free service available to Troy residents only. Businesses and commercial properties are not eligible for this program.
