The historic
Downtown District of Troy is bounded by City Hall,
the Troy Public Library, Russell Sage College, and
the Hudson River. Replete with picturesque nineteenth
century architecture, our neighborhood has been featured
in a number of nationally run films. Lining the banks
of the Hudson River are buildings that were originally
commercial and warehouse space and now provide loft
living and work space for twenty-first century residents
and businesses, especially artists and antiques dealers.
Further from the river are historic brownstones and
mansions that shelter a mix of small businesses and
residents. Continuing east are buildings from the prime
of the great retail department stores, some now converted
to office space for several departments of New York
State as well as other large businesses, some in the
process of rehabilitation, and others awaiting their
future. The area has a wide mix of residents--homeowners,
renters, students, elderly, professionals, and laborers.
The downtown neighborhood provides the amenities of
the urban environment, including several of the best
restaurants in the Capital District, the acoustically
spectacular, world-renowned Troy Savings Bank Music
Hall, and a growing group of unique retail shops in
a very compact, walkable setting.
