TROY-
Mayor Harry Tutunjian will make good on a campaign promise
to clean up the central business district, the mayor's
office announced Friday.
The effort by a crew of two laborers, a driver and a
supervisor will take place every weekend from 7 to 10
a.m. It was described as an effort to address a perennial
problem.
"Everyone who has ever spent time in downtown Troy on
the weekends understands that there can be issues with
cleanliness, particularly in the areas around bars and
restaurants," Tutunjian said.
"Paper plates strewn around the city and overflowing
garbage cans are unsightly and not conducive to the
image we are trying to portray. This is a program that
will address those issues."
The mayor explains that rather than spending big bucks
on overtime pay, the workers will be paid through judiciously
administered compensatory time.
"We hope that this also sends a message to the people
of Troy: We are serious about cleaning up the city and
believe it will have a snowball effect," the mayor said.
