Love
was in the air despite it being Friday the 13th.
Ken Dufty and Mary Schoolfield wed in front
of their River Street antique shop, before all
of their friends.
The mayor did the honors, and it may have been
the most romantic streetside wedding Troy has
ever seen.
"From now on, Friday the 13th will be a very
lucky day," said the groom, who owns Wychina
antiques. "This store has been magical from
the start - Mary was the wand."
The romance started when the Schoolfield walked
into Wychina two years ago looking for a cuckoo
clock. Dufty sold it to her for $15.
Mary said she was surprised; she had priced
clocks elsewhere for $300. He later told her
that he liked her so much after seeing her once
that he almost gave it to her for free.
Ken was divorced and Mary was in the process
of getting a separation.
"I had a very interesting reaction - that I
had known her before in another life," Dufty
said. "Since then, we've had dreams about living
in a farmhouse together (in a previous life.)"
Dufty opened the store four years ago. He says
the "spirit-guides" were driving him to open
a store here, which he is thankful for, because
he never would have met Schoolfield otherwise.
After a few years of owning the shop, Ken told
himself:
"I'm 52 years old. I'll meet the right woman
in the next world."
Two weeks later, Mary walked in the door. She
began working there soon after. The rest is
history.
As the sun shone on Friday's ceremony, Mayor
Harry Tutunjian said it was a beautiful day
for a wedding. He said it was an honor because
Ken and Mary have been a big part of Troy's
"wonderful comeback."
After Tutunjian began the service, he asked
if the couple had anything to say.
"We met here at Wychina, and we fell in love
here," said Mary. "I can't think of a better
place to be married. I have all these friends
because of you. I loved you to pieces the day
I met you."
Then Ken said to her:
"Two years ago, I fell madly, head-over-heels
in love with you - and I have not stopped. You
are Wychina's greatest miracle. You're wonderful
family. You have beautiful children who've accepted
me into their lives."
Friends who witnessed the street ceremony said
the couple is perfect for each other.
Dana Rudolph, who gave the bride her wedding
jewelry, said she never saw a more romantic
wedding.
"I was so excited I couldn't sleep last night!"
said Rudolph, who owns the jewelry shop next
to Wychina. "Ken told me a year ago he was getting
married out front and they're finally doing
it."
Ken's cousin Robert said that Ken has been much
happier since he met Mary.
Ken's high school pal John Conners said he is
happy for his friend because Mary is such a
good person.
The best man, John Hanson, toasted his friends
and wished them a lovely future together.
Mary's best friend Lorraine O'Brien also offered
words to the newlyweds.
"We all think 13 is a lucky number," she said.
"I met my husband on Friday the 13th. Although
he is now my ex, we still have a good relationship."
During the toast, the Duftys recalled that this
Valentine romance all began with a cuckoo clock.
"Even though I sold it cheap, I still say I
got the better part of the bargain," Ken said.
