Electrician License
The Office of the City Clerk has available
a Master Electrician License application and
offers the exam 3 times per year.
You can download the Master Electrician License Application from
this page, pick one up at the City Clerk's office,
or give us a call at (518) 270-4541 to have one mailed
to you.
Please note that this application is an 11x14 sheet.
The completed
application
must
be
NOTARIZED and inspection certificates for at
least 2 contracts executed during each of the last
6 preceding years MUST BE PRESENTED
with application. You are welcome to drop the completed
application off at the City Clerk's office in City
Hall or Mail it to: Troy City Clerk, 1776 Sxith Avenue, Troy, New York 12180. Please see the
Schedule below for this year’s application deadlines
and exam dates.
Upon approval by the Board, applicant
will be required to pass the next scheduled Master
Electrician Exam with a grade of at least 75%. Cost
at the time of the exam is $200 ($100 exam fee/$100
licensing fee). If applicant fails exam, $100 will
be reimbursed.
RENEWAL
Each licensed Master Electrician
must pay $100 yearly for license renewal. Failure to
make payment on time
(December 15th) requires that the exam be taken again
to reinstate the license.
CLASS B
If an electrician
is licensed in another City or State, they are entitled
to a Class B Permit for each job they wish to perform
in the City of Troy. The Permit Fee is $200. Applications
for Class B Electrical License may be submitted
to Code Enforcement for approval, upon which the
fee will be paid to the City Clerk.
They must present to the Department
of Code Enforcement a License (in good standing)
from another municipality
or state, a Certificate of Insurance Liability, proof
of Workers’ Compensation Insurance, plans and/or
drawings for proposed project. Once Code Enforcement
approves their application, they can present that application
to the City Clerk’s Office for payment and final
processing of the Class B permit.

Each exam will start at 9:00 am and end at 11:00 am. The “open book” test is based on the 2008 NEC book, which is the current New York State Standard for electrical code.
