Marriage License

The Office of the City Clerk issues marriage licenses. You can download the application from this page, pick one up at the City Clerk's office, or give us a call at (518) 279-7134 to have one mailed to you. There is a $40.00 fee which includes the license and a certificate of marriage.

The license you receive has a NY State mandated 24 hour waiting period before it can be used and is valid for 59 days thereafter. You MUST be at least 18 years of age to apply for this license without parental consent and both parties to this marriage must appear in person in the Office of the City Clerk to sign the license before it can be used. Licenses obtained in the City of Troy may be used anywhere in New York state. No refunds given once license is issued.

If this is NOT your first marriage, please have original sealed divorce papers with Judge's signature or a sealed certificate of death for a deceased spouse. This includes ALL divorces and/or deaths.

Copy of Marriage License
You can get a copy of your marriage certificate mailed to you. You must send a copy of your drivers license, a check for $10.00 made payable to the Troy City Clerk, the date of your marriage, your husband's full name or your wife's maiden name. Upon receipt of the above information, we will forward the marriage certificate to the address you provide.

Genealogy Search
The City Clerk’s office performs genealogy searches for marriages only. If you require searches for Birth or Death records you must contact the Office of Vital Records at (518) 279-7309.

Marriage Records date back to November of 1881. An application must be filled out and accompanied by a check for $22.00 for each search payable to the Troy City Clerk. You can either mail the application and payment to the City Clerk’s office, 1776 Sixth Avenue, Troy, NY 12180 or you can drop it off at the Clerk’s office. We ask that one week be given to complete the search.
