Madison
Street Fishing Pier Project

Overview
The City of
Troy recently completed construction of a fishing pier
at the end of Madison Street. Through a grant
from the New York State Department of State's Division
of Coastal Resources, the public is now able to better
utilize a long popular spot for those wishing to fish
in the Hudson River. The deck is cantilevered
out over the river to provide additional access to the
water. Cut outs in the railing are provided for those
with special needs who wish to fish. Amenities
such as benches, tables and waste receptacles are anticipated
to be added to the area in the upcoming months.
Additional
funding recently awarded by the Department of State
has given the City the ability to add a kayak/canoe
launch to the south side of the fishing pier.
Stairs and an elevated kayak/canoe slide will allow
the public direct and easy access to the river.
Bids for this project are anticipated to be solicited
during the first half of 2010 with construction being
completed prior to the end of the year.
Madison Street
is one of few points allowing public access to the Hudson
River in South Troy. The plan for the fishing
pier began as a way to provide more river-based amenities
to the public. What previously existed as an overgrown
sea wall top is now a bright and open area with decking,
railings (handicap accessibility), and a viewing area.
Utility and street improvements to improve water runoff
have commenced are anticipated to conclude by mid 2010.
Improvements to this area are anticipated to continue
as the City works in partnership with the Beacon Institute
Rivers and Estuary Center and the New York State Dormitory
Authority to design and construct a Satellite Estuary
Center adjacent to this site.
