The City of Troy Department of Public Works provides many of the day to day services that make Troy a cleaner and safer city. The department consists of five bureaus, whose responsibilities include but are not limited to repairing our roads, plowing the snow, maintaining city buildings and vehicles, installing traffic devices and picking up the city refuse. The employees of the Troy Public Works Department are committed to provide the best service possible to our taxpayers. “Excellence In All We Do” and “Service To The Public” are our primary objectives.

DPW Bureaus

Bureau of Streets - The Bureau of Street Maintenance is responsible for paving, street repairs, crack sealing, pot hole repair, snow removal and salting, tree removal, bulk trash removal, brush cleaning and removal, some building demolition and many other city services including street cleaning, street maintenance and sweeping of approximately 147 miles of city streets. Twenty-three employees staff this Bureau.

Bureau of Sanitation - The Bureau of Sanitation collects and disposes of approximately 14,000 tons of municipal solid waste per year. We collect from the 17,000 residential households and approximately 3,000 business properties in the city per week in a safe, efficient and sanitary manner. The Bureau of Sanitation also collects all recyclable materials such as plastic, glass, metal, paper and yard waste from residential properties in the city. Twenty-eight employees staff this Bureau.

Bureau of Traffic Control - The Bureau of Traffic Control is responsible for placement, operation and maintenance of traffic signals, signs, installing guide rail, maintenance of all street pavement markings and for the control of traffic throughout the city. This bureau maintains some 120 traffic signals, 450,000 feet of pavement markings, 120 crosswalks, 2,500 traffic control signs, 1,600 street name signs and many miles of guide rail. The staff of this bureau also maintains, installs and repairs the 80 plus two-way radios in the various vehicles within the Department of Public Works. The bureau also performs coordination of traffic barricades for various civic events, maintains a city banner program and installs holiday decorations. Six employees staff this Bureau.

Bureau of the Central Garage - The Bureau of the Central Garage is responsible for the repair and maintenance of all Department of Public Works vehicles; City Hall based vehicles and the Department of Public Safety-Fire Vehicles. These vehicles include sanitation packer type garbage trucks, automated garbage trucks, fire trucks, ambulances, pick up trucks, full size dump trucks, cars, salters, snow plows, large pieces of earth moving equipment, pavers, rollers, front-end loaders, bulldozers and a variety of miscellaneous small equipment including lawn mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, generators, green mowers, cement mixer, concrete saws and zambonis. In all, there is approximately 110 large pieces of equipment and 100 plus small pieces of equipment. Nine employees staff this Bureau.

Bureau of Facilities Maintenance - The Bureau of Facilities Maintenance is responsible for the maintenance of city-owned property including City Hall, police buildings, fire stations, public works buildings, parking garages and other city owned buildings. There are twenty-two buildings in all. The duties include janitorial services, plumbing, heating, electrical, carpentry and other miscellaneous repairs. The bureau also handles the boarding up and securing of city owned buildings that have been acquired by the City because of delinquent taxes, fire, etc. They also take part in demolition of city owned buildings that have been determined to be unsafe. A preventative maintenance program is in place to help keep all city buildings in first class condition together with a program to provide energy conservation improvements with the overall goal of keeping the city's energy usage to a minimum. Ten employees staff this Bureau.
