Statement by Mayor Madden on Governor Cuomo’s Approval of Fire Insurance Accountability Legislation
TROY, NY – Mayor Patrick Madden has issued a statement following Governor Andrew Cuomo’s approval of the ‘Fire Lien Proceeds Bill,’ sponsored by Assemblyman John McDonald and Senator Kathy Marchione:
“Fires are devastating events that hurt neighborhoods, displace families and negatively impact the quality of life in communities like Troy. Unfortunately, fire insurance coverage – meant to help responsible property owners rebuild – is often collected but never used to repair fire-damaged structures, leaving taxpayers and local governments holding the bill.
“My administration is pleased to see the expansion of the current law to include non-owner-occupied two family residences, giving municipalities another tool to hold irresponsible property owners financially accountable and recoup costs for maintaining fire-damaged properties. Removing this incentive for property owners to abandon their buildings will strengthen our city’s enforcement efforts to combat vacancy and blight in our community.
“Thank you to Governor Cuomo, Assemblyman McDonald and Senator Marchione for their leadership, advocacy and commitment to supporting efforts which stabilize and rebuild our neighborhoods.”
