City of Troy, Arts Center of the Capital Region Kick-Off Public Art Master Plan

Public Art Project Finalists to Be Announced Wednesday Evening at Summer Pop-Up Plaza in Historic Monument Square

TROY, NY – The summer pop-up pedestrian plaza ‘MVP Health Care Troy Summer Square’ at Broadway and River Street starts today in downtown Troy. Mayor Patrick Madden and the Arts Center of the Capital Region are encouraging Troy residents and visitors to attend a special kick-off event on Wednesday evening, July 19 as the community explores Troy and gathers ideas and thoughts about how to create and support public art throughout the City. For three weeks, diverse programs will be presented in the evenings on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday nights.

Fifty regional creatives developed over 100 ideas for Explore Troy projects, with finalists scheduled to be announced at tonight’s kick-off event, Wednesday, July 19 at 6:00pm. Attendees can also participate in ‘What Is This Place? A history of Monument Square’ and a walking tour of Troy’s downtown monuments with Rensselaer County Historical Society Town and County Historian, Kathy Sheehan, followed by a live storytelling session with artist Geraldine Fuhrmann. This project is seeking ideas about what makes Troy unique, and what kind of art, in what places, are most interesting for the City now and in the near future.

“Troy is thrilled to host the Summer Square this year as we seek out new, exciting ways to celebrate our community through public art projects,” said Mayor Patrick Madden. “We are pleased to partner with the Arts Center of the Capital Region on the Master Plan for Public Art which provides our community a unique opportunity to support local artists and promote our vibrant city as a cultural destination.”

“I am excited to hear from all who visit Summer Square what kind of art they want to see in Troy, and where they want to see it,” said Judie Gilmore, Project Director and public art expert. “I’m also thrilled to announce 14 artists’ projects chosen for Summer Square. The Explore Troy Projects, chosen through a competitive process, explore different aspects of Troy and all do what art does best and what we are trying to do for the Master Plan for Public Art — connect with people around common themes and shared experiences, celebrate the uniqueness of this place, and delight and engage people of all ages.”
