Message from the
Mayor
Welcome to the 60th running of the Troy Turkey Trot
the oldest race in the Capital District. From its humble
beginning in 1916 (with only 6 runners entered) the
Troy Turkey Trot has grown into one of the largest
road races in upstate New York. This year approximately
5,000 participants are expected to take part in the
five Turkey Trot events. The popularity of this event
can be described in three words: Tradition, Tradition,
and Tradition!
Our activities kick off with the 1.5 Mile Turkey Walk
at 8 a.m., followed by the 1 Mile Grade School Race
at 8:45 a.m. At 9:15 a.m., spectators young and old
will be entertained when our official race mascot, “Trotter
the Turkey”, and his friends compete in the 4th
Annual Mascot Run. The largest event follows at 9:30
a.m. with the running of the Open 5K (3.1 miles) with
more than 3,000 people expected to participate. The
final event of the morning is the Open 10K (6.2 miles)
set to start at 10:30 a.m.
To make the registration process more convenient and
runner friendly, the City of Troy is proud to once
again offer participants the option to register online
at www.troyny.gov/turkeytrot by November 16th at 3:00pm
EST. This year, runners from as many as 35 states and
several countries are expected to compete alongside
our large contingent of local runners.
Whether you are walking, jogging, running, cheering
or watching the Troy Turkey Trot offers something for
everyone to enjoy. We invite you to bring the entire
family to historic downtown Troy and become part of
this proud Thanksgiving Day tradition – The 60th
Running of the Troy Turkey Trot. For more information
call the Gobbler Line at (518) 235-8993.
Happy Holidays!!
Harry J.Tutunjian
Mayor of Troy, NY

The "Troy Turkey Trot" will
take place on
November 22, 2007

The
Troy Turkey Trot Turns 60!
Documented information
has been uncovered that shows the Thanksgiving
Day races in Troy
actually began in 1916. Seventeen runnings of Thanksgiving
Day races, held from 1916-1935, have been documented
by Ed Neiles on behalf of the USA Track & Field
Adirondack Association. Twenty-nine years later,
in 1964,
the race was
started up again by the late Bill Carley. The Trot
has been held every year since, except for 1971
when a snowstorm forced the race to be cancelled.
As a result this year will be the 60th runing of
the Troy Turkey
Trot.
This
makes
the “Trot” the oldest in
the Capital District, the 3rd
oldest race in the state, the 12th
oldest race in the country, and tied
for 57th oldest race in the world. |

Back for 2007 - "the Trot Chip"
The Troy Turkey Trot is again pleased to offer the latest in race time technology-The "Trot
Chip." The chip is a tiny electronic device that is worn on the laces
of your running shoe. The chip triggers timing when it crosses a detection
device housed in a mat that will span the finish line. Chips w/instructions
for use will be included in each runner's packet and are leased to runners
until the completion of their race. A $25.00 fee will be charged for lost chips.
Runners who already own their own chip should enter their chip number on the
race application form where indicated. Runners that for any reason do not race
on Thanksgiving morning must return their chip to: Troy Turkey Trot Chip Return
c/o Knickerbacker Recreational Facility 191 103rd Street Troy, New York 12180
by Thursday Dec. 6th or pay a $25.00 Chip replacement fee.
