Public Utilities Officials Release 2021 Hydrant Flushing Schedule

TROY, NY – Officials with the City’s Department of Public Utilities today announced the annual hydrant flushing program will begin Monday, May 3rd, and will continue through Tuesday, May 11th. The full schedule is available at

Please note: due to maintenance issues, the final two days of hydrant flushing have been rescheduled for Monday 5/17 and Tuesday 5/18.

Hydrant flushing is a controlled release of water from fire hydrants, and is part of general maintenance of the City’s water distribution network. Flushing of hydrants helps to clear iron & mineral deposits and other sediments from water mains to ensure adequate flow of water is available for public use, including businesses, residential homes, and by firefighters during fire emergencies.

Customers may experience temporary discoloration in their water and possible reduced water pressure during flushing operations. Customers are also advised to avoid washing clothes when flushing is taking place in their area. After hydrant flushing is complete in your area, customers can run the cold water tap until water runs clear.

Water main and hydrant flushing will be completed during regular working hours (7:00 am – 3:30 pm) with the exception of the downtown business district.

Please note that dates may be subject to change as necessary. For questions or additional information please contact the Department of Public Utilities at (518) 237-0241.
