Transcript: Mayor Madden Delivers Remarks at 2019 Fire Department Graduation Ceremony

TROY, NYTranscript of prepared remarks delivered by Mayor Patrick Madden during the 2019 Fire Academy Graduation Ceremony at the College of Saint Rose’s Massry Center for the Arts on Thursday, May 24th, 2019. Three Troy firefighters joined the Collar City’s fire service following 16 weeks of training.

“Good afternoon and thank you for allowing me to be a part of this celebration.  It is a privilege and honor to stand before all of you today.

“To the families of the graduates: I would like to offer my thanks. I know it has not been an easy journey for you.  Your loved ones have come home from their trainings physically and mentality exhausted, and maybe even sore and bruised. And this is just the beginning.  Your love, your support and your encouragement have played a significant role in getting your graduate to this stage today. I am sure they are delighted to be sharing this moment with you.

“To the Instructors: thank you for your dedication to these young men and women. The hard earned knowledge you have been able to pass on to these graduates will go a long way in ensuring their safety and efficacy in the days and years ahead.  Without your commitment to sharing these lessons our communities would not be nearly so well served.

“And to the Graduates: We are very proud of the hard work you have put in to get to this stage today.  But we are prouder still of your selfless commitment to a noble and proud profession of public service.

“Over the coming years you will miss birthdays; you will miss holidays; you will miss your kids’ recitals and sporting events. You will be called on to put yourself in dangerous situations risking your own health and safety.

“You have chosen to do this not for glory and certainly not for riches, but out of a desire to help other human beings in their most vulnerable moments.  There simply is no higher calling. Please stay true to that high ideal.

“Our respective communities are proud of your accomplishments and grateful for your service.  And we are delighted to be here today as you pass one more milestone in what will be an exciting and fulfilling career.

“Congratulations and thank you for your kind attention.”
