Home Posted on February 16, 2024

Mayor Carmella Mantello and the Troy Police Department honored Officer Samuel Moses on Friday. Moses was the first African-American to serve in the Troy Police Department, he joined in 1955.

Moses was a veteran of World War II and served on the USS Chester. During his time as an officer as a member of the TPD, Sam managed to thwart a robbery and apprehend two suspects.  Sam would always share the story of how he fired a single shot and the bullet hit both suspects allowing Sam to capture the men single handedly.

Sam died in 2019 at the age of 93. His wife Gertrude passed in 2022 at the age of 96.

Sam was the father of 13 kids, 28 Grandchildren and 42 Great Grandchildren.

We are honored to share Sam's legacy with his family and friends, along with all the current members of the Troy Police Department.

Thank You Officer Samuel Moses!
