Troy, NY (May 23) – After years of discussion, Mayor Mantello is today announcing an agreement has been reached with American Rock Salt to relocate the giant salt pile on Troy's waterfront, paving the way for future revitalization and access to the Hudson River as envisioned in Troy's Comprehensive Plan. 

Mayor Carmella Mantello said, "We are excited to announce that after lengthy negotiations, the City of Troy will sign written agreements which will include a commitment that the rock salt pile be moved within the next three years. In exchange, the city will defer the construction of the final two blocks of the South Troy Industrial Road.”

The South Troy Industrial Road’s current completion level has diverted virtually all industrial truck traffic south and away from city residential streets. In short, the industrial road’s purpose has been met. 

The City is optimistic that these agreements will open up former industrial space for more appropriate development that is consistent with Troy’s vision for riverfront property. In addition, three pending multi-million-dollar lawsuits against the City will be settled and discontinued. These agreements represent concrete progress toward Troy’s Comprehensive Plan.

Julie Tighe, President of the New York League of Conservation Voters, said, “The agreement to remove the rock salt pile from the shores of the Hudson River is good news for water quality and the City of Troy, and we applaud Mayor Mantello for ensuring that protecting the environment and improving Troy’s waterfront economy go hand-in-hand.”

Gunther Buerman, Chairman of American Rock Salt, LLC said, “The proposed settlement will allow ARSC to continue to provide lifesaving salt to the Capital District for a number of years. It will also give ARSC time to relocate to a new facility within the Capital District to make available our deicing product to insure safe transportation during the area’s harsh winters.”

Don Fane, Owner of Troy Slag, said, “We are happy to put litigations behind us and move forward toward revitalizing our portion of the waterfront. We appreciate the opportunity to transition the salt pile over the coming years in a manner that will safeguard the environment while preserving this important commodity for local municipalities.”

“I am extremely passionate about our waterfront development and all the Hudson River has to offer,” Mayor Mantello continued. “This change will allow us to better utilize our waterfront as the front door to economic development and waterfront revitalization, including the opportunity for land and water trails and recreational opportunities.”

This agreement will be acted on at tonight’s City Council Meeting.
