Mayor Mantello Announces Annual Pumpkin Smash Event at Knickerbacker Park
Eco Friendly Pumpkin Disposal Event Scheduled for Saturday, November 8th
(TROY, NY) - With the spooky season coming to a close in a couple weeks, Mayor Mantello invites residents, children, and families to take part in a fun and environmentally friendly way to say goodbye to Halloween by smashing their pumpkins.
The Pumpkin Smash event will take place on Saturday, November 8th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Knickerbacker Park. Families and residents are encouraged to bring their old jack-o’lanterns and decomposed pumpkins for a smashing good time. Participants can take a swing, drop, or simply toss their pumpkins to the ground, helping to ensure that these holiday leftovers are disposed of responsibly.
After the smashing fun, all pumpkin remains will be collected and properly composted in an eco-friendly manner at Bugbee Farm, preventing waste from ending up in landfills and contributing to a greener, cleaner Troy.
“This event is a great example of how we can make sustainability engaging for all ages,” said Mayor Carmella R. Mantello. “Instead of tossing pumpkins in the trash, families can have some fun while helping the environment. We’re proud to partner with Rensselaer County on this creative effort to promote responsible waste disposal and environmental stewardship.”
The event is being held in partnership with Rensselaer County, reflecting the continued collaboration between the City and County on community focused sustainability initiatives.
If you are unable to attend the event but still want to dispose of your pumpkin, you may drop them off at the City of Troy DPW Garage (40 Orr Street) from Wednesday, November 5th to Friday, November 7th. The garage is open from 8:30am – 4:00pm.
Residents are encouraged to bring their pumpkins (free of paint, candles, or decorations) and join in the smashing fun.
