Troy, NY (May 7) – At the beginning of her administration, Mayor Carmella Mantello pledged to replace all lead pipes within the next four years, and in less than four months, the city’s lead pipe inventory has surpassed 50%.
“No parent should be afraid of what is coming out of their tap,” said Mayor Mantello. “My administration hit the ground running with lead pipe education, testing, and replacement. In less than four months, we have already hit our first milestone of 50% inventory. Just imagine what we will accomplish in four years.”
Mayor Mantello, the administration, various city officials, community groups and volunteers took part in a door-to-door lead pipe canvassing event this past month to educate residents on the City of Troy’s Lead Pipe Replacement Program. The city encourages homeowners to contact the Department of Public Utilities for FREE lead pipe testing and replacement. In addition, residents who verify their pipes with the City of Troy will receive a free Brita water filter.
“Going door-to-door is something we must do to educate residents on the importance of lead pipe testing,” Mayor Mantello continued. “Many residents don’t know what services the City of Troy has to offer, or that those services are free. We plan on hosting a few more canvassing and public education events throughout the year to really drive up those numbers.”
