TROY, N.Y. – The Madden Administration urges your participation in a third party community survey on the proposed closure of the Burdett Birth Center at Samaritan Hospital. The independent third party was retained by Samaritan Hospital with survey responses due by August 28, 2023. Individual responses will remain confidential.

The survey is a part of the health equity impact assessment that the Madden Administration called for upon learning about a plan to close the city’s only birth center. The survey was shared with City Hall at an afternoon meeting on August 23, 2023 where Mayor Madden and Deputy Mayor Nolin expressed their opposition to and concerns with the proposed closure. The survey will close on August 28, 2023. The meeting preceded the Forum to Save the Burdett Birth Center at Samaritan Hospital, happening on August 23, 2023 at 6:30 PM at the RPI Chapel + Cultural Center.

Mayor Patrick Madden has been outspoken against the proposed plan by Trinity Health and St. Peter’s Health Partners to close the Burdett Birth Center. While the plan would leave all Troy families with limited maternal care options, Mayor Madden has cited that the plan would have a disproportionate impact on underserved communities, rural communities and women of color, each of whom statistically already experience worse maternal health and mortality outcomes. In addition to worsening maternal care for local families, Mayor Madden also cites the impact this decision would have on the availability and quality of emergency medical services.
