TROY, NY — Mayor Patrick Madden is encouraging Troy residents to get involved in this year’s annual City-wide Earth Day Cleanup Program. Each April, Troy residents, families, and business owners come together to organize community-driven cleanup and beautification projects at local parks, green spaces, and neighborhoods across Collar City.

Earth Day 2023 is Saturday, April 22nd. Cleanup projects will be held between Saturday, April 15th and Sunday, April 23rd

Mayor Patrick Madden said, “The City’s annual Earth Day cleanup gives residents an opportunity to make a direct and positive impact in their neighborhood. Community involvement is critical to a successful Earth Day, and I encourage our residents to lend a hand this weekend to help keep Troy clean and green this spring.”

Troy residents can make an impact on a neighborhood level, including:

  • Participating in a small-scale cleanup
  • Adopting a park or other green space with your neighbors

To organize a project in your neighborhood, register your event at www.troyny.gov/1331/Earth-Day   Once registered, the following complimentary items are offered to your group and are available for pick up in the Mayor's Office at City Hall (Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm):

  • Recycling bin stickers
  • Reusable bags
  • Clear trash bags for litter cleanup
  • Textile magnets
  • Pharmaceutical disposal bags (https://deterrasystem.com/

Leaf bags are also available, but you must call the Parks and Recreation Office at (518) 235-7761 or (518) 235-0215 to schedule a time to pick-up leaf bags.

On an individual level, Troy residents can take many actions to make a difference:

  • Take the Earth Day Challenge, a 22-day series that allows people to connect through challenges to take action right now, and every day, for our planet.
  • Beautify, clean up and improve your garden, front walk, or your front/back yards
  • Host a virtual screening party for “The Story of Plastic” or another earth-centric movie
  • Plant trees in your yard or alley for Arbor Day (April 28) or sponsor a tree to be planted elsewhere
  • Visit NYS Department of Environmental Conservation website for Earth Day tips: https://www.dec.ny.gov/public/101402.html
  • Visit Earth Day Initiative for their recommendations: http://www.earthdayinitiative.org/
  • Take an Earth Day pledge: https://www.earthday.org/20-20-pledge/
