[ARCHIVED] Mayor Mantello Updates City’s Lead Pipe Replacement Program

Announcement (1)

Troy, NY (March 20) – Today, Mayor Mantello announces work toward a lead-free Troy is underway.

“No parent should be afraid of what is coming out of their tap,” said Mayor Carmella Mantello. “We have a very ambitious plan to replace all lead pipes in the next four years while also meeting the Environmental Protection Agency’s mandate to have our inventory done by October of this year.”

Mayor Mantello pledged to provide funding for and replace all lead pipes within the next four years and the administration certainly hit the ground running. So far, the city has:

Successfully used the $516,565 NYSDOH grant that was awarded in 2018, removing and replacing piping to 101 private residences in 2023.

Awarded a $572,000 grant from the NYS Environmental Facilities Corporation for inventory purposes.

Applied for a $12.8 million grant from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

20 lines have already been replaced this year.

602 Brita Pitchers have been distributed to residents.

o    Last week, the city received a shipment of 400 pitchers and 400 filter cartridges.

“In addition to everything we have done and still plan on doing, we will be undertaking an in-depth plan to educate residents on lead pipe inventory,” Mayor Mantello continued. “This is a team effort that includes door-to-door campaigning, mailers for residents, public service announcements and much more.”

While addressing the issue of safe drinking water, the city is also proactively tackling corrosion following an Administrative Order issued by the EPA in 2023 by ensuring:

A temporary orthophosphate system will be online in the summer of this year.

A permanent orthophosphate system will be operational by August of 2025.

The City of Troy will provide updates to residents as they become available.
