Mayor Carmella R. Mantello to Proclaim March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
(Troy, NY) - Mayor R. Carmella Mantello is sponsoring a resolution designating March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The resolution is set to be passed at tomorrow evening’s Regular Council Meeting.
As the mother of a special needs son, Mayor Mantello has been a dedicated advocate for inclusivity and accessibility throughout her tenure as Mayor and as a member of the City Council. She has championed the "Think DIFFERENTLY" initiative established in 2015 in Dutchess County, which promotes greater awareness and support for individuals with intellectual, physical, and developmental disabilities.”
Among her efforts, Mantello worked with the Epilepsy Foundation to install the first handicapped-accessible swing in Troy’s parks. She continues to collaborate with neighborhood organizations and city officials to ensure a more inclusive and accessible community for all.
"The most effective way to increase awareness is through active participation, education, and recognizing the valuable contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities," said Mayor Mantello.
She further emphasized, “Troy is a city that believes in inclusion, accessibility, and opportunity for all. From working with the Epilepsy Foundation to install the first handicapped-accessible swing in our parks to advocating for greater accessibility in our neighborhoods, I remain committed to ensuring that everyone—regardless of ability—feels seen, valued, and empowered. Let’s all take a moment this month to learn, listen, and support those with disabilities. A small act of kindness, an open heart, and a commitment to inclusivity can make all the difference.”
Mayor Mantello’s resolution will be voted upon that the City Council meeting, on March 6th, 2025.
