Mayor Madden Issues Update on City Preparations Ahead of Major Winter Storm
TROY, NY – Ahead of potentially heavy snowfall arriving in the Capital Region Monday night into Tuesday, Mayor Patrick Madden has issued an update on the City’s preparations for this potentially hazardous winter storm. City Departments of Public Works and Public Utilities crews are coordinating on storm response efforts and will be out in full force to keep Troy's approximately 150 miles of roads and alleyways clear. A sufficient supply of road salt is available to treat streets ahead of the storm.
Mayor Madden said, “Keeping roadways open and passable is essential during periods of heavy snowfall. Necessary preparations are being made to keep roads clear of snow and ice to allow residents and families to travel safely to their destinations and ensure emergency vehicles and personnel can quickly respond to calls for assistance. We ask all Trojans to take appropriate precautions, limit travel when possible, and give City plow vehicles room to clear snow from streets throughout the storm.”
Residents are encouraged to move their vehicles into driveways (where available) or City-owned off-street lots and garages to help keep roadways clear for plow vehicles to operate. Weather Forecast
The National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded a Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning for the greater Capital Region, including Troy. Heavy, wet snow is expected to create hazardous travel risk and blustery conditions may result in power outages. accumulations of 8 to12 inches possible. Travel may be impacted. The Winter Storm Warning will remain in effect from 8 am Monday, March 13 through 8 pm Wednesday, March 15.

Snow Emergency Plan
Additionally, Mayor Madden is reminding Troy residents, families and businesses to review the city’s Snow Emergency rules and procedures https://www.troyny.gov/205/Snow-Emergency
“In the case of significant snowfall, the City may declare a snow emergency to clear roads after a major storm. Full cooperation from the public is critical to ensure our streets remain open and passable,” added Mayor Madden. “We can all do our part to help City crews quickly and efficiently clear roadways by reviewing the necessary Snow Emergency rules and procedures.”
A snow emergency has not been declared at this time. Snow emergencies are declared at the discretion of the Mayor at either 8 am or 8 pm and will last for 48 hours. If a snow emergency is called the city will send an email and text Alert to residents and notify news outlets. Information will also be posted on the city website and social media pages.
Neighborhood Safety Tips
Mayor Madden encourages Troy residents to lend a hand during the storm. The City has issued the following reminders to Collar City residents to assist with snow removal efforts in neighborhoods across the community:
- Help protect your family and neighborhood by shoveling out fire hydrants near your home or business during and after the storm. This can help save local emergency personnel valuable time when responding to possible medical or public safety emergencies in your neighborhood. During an emergency, please dial 9-1-1.
- Sidewalks adjacent to properties must be cleared of snow by 10:00 a.m. the day following the end of a snowstorm. Do not shovel snow into city streets – this can create a hazard for vehicles and reduces effectiveness of snow cleanup by City crews.
- Check in with neighbors, family, and friends – especially the elderly, those with young children, or mobility issues – who might need assistance.
